CRC in the News!
David Tommons from Chain Reaction Cycles gears up for London 2012...
Chain Reaction Cycles mechanic David Tommons has been selected to work at this year’s London 2012 Olympic Games as part of Shimano’s mechanical support team.
Following a UK-wide application process by Shimano, the largest company in the biking industry, David will form part of a very select team, working with all nationalities within the Olympic Village to keep their bikes running smoothly.
“Dale McMullen, our workshop manager, came round and told me I’d been selected. When I submitted my application I didn’t think too much about it,” said David. “When I realised it wasn’t a dream, it was a bit of a shock to the system!”
Having worked in the cycle industry for over twenty years, David has a wealth of experience in all things biking. Since joining CRC just over three years ago, David is now one of the key members of our custom wheel building staff based at company headquarters in Doagh, Northern Ireland.
An active cyclist himself, he regularly puts in over 200 miles a week on and off the road on any one of his nine bikes. Despite being a huge opportunity only open to a few people, David is more concerned with getting everything right.
“To be honest, I’m more worried about a chain breaking,” he said, adding: “My family and work colleagues are extremely excited and I know I should be more excited myself! Maybe it comes with age, but a week with Shimano in London...at the Olympics? That’s just fantastic! I might even get in some sightseeing!”

'Thanks for saving my life' - the Kent Air Ambulance to the rescue again!
A British grasstrack champion was reunited with the Kent Air Ambulance pilot and doctor who saved his life as he donated £5,500 to the charity.
Craig Drury, 18, sustained multiple injuries after he was involved in a racing incident, colliding with a barrier at a race meeting in Collier Street .
Chief Pilot, Captain Blaine Ashurst landed at the track within just two minutes of the 999 call and Dr Steve Rashford and critical care paramedic Chris Fudge gave Craig an emergency anaesthetic at the scene.
The teenager was airlifted to the major trauma centre at the Royal London Hospital where he spent 36 days, 12 of them in intensive care, before he was finally allowed back home.
He said: “I don’t remember anything about the crash but I remember talking to people on the day. My sponsor was telling me how well I was doing, that I’d got it in the bag.
“The doctors at the hospital sat mum and dad down that night and said I had a slim chance of making it through the night. Kent Air Ambulance saved me, they told me that in hospital.
“I was thanking them in hospital and they were saying don’t thank us, you’ve got to thank the air ambulance.”
Craig sustained three fractured vertebrae, a punctured lung, broken ribs and a broken leg and collarbone.
Following the crash in September, Craig’s grateful family and friends raised £5,000 for the life-saving charity from a number of fundraising events including a golf day, sponsored swim and mini triathlon.
Craig visited the helicopter base last week (November 28th) to meet Blaine and Steve for the first time since his accident and presented them with a signed photo saying: “Thanks for saving my life.”
He was seven points clear of his rivals going into the final race when he crashed and was unaware he had won the 250cc British Championship.
Although he is expected to make a full recovery within two years, Craig has now decided to quit the sport.
He added: “It’s a shame I’ve been cut short in my path because I’ve ridden in Europe since I was 12, representing England . I’m glad I’m out of it now because if I go back something bad will happen.”
Dr Rashford said: “Obviously we’re just so happy that Craig has done so well. To be as sick as he was at the scene, it’s amazing that he has made this type of recovery.
“The fact that he has come back and thanked us is wonderful. It’s not something we expect but we really appreciate it.”
Craig Drury is reunited with members of the Kent Air Ambulance team
***The Air Ambulance service in Kent, Surrey and Sussex rely upon the generosity of the public to support the two helicopters based at Marden and Dunsfold. If you would like to make a donation to the Air Ambulance please call 01622 833833. Miraculous recovery for biker Joe thanks to the great work of the Kent Air Ambulance!
A motocross rider has stunned the Kent Air Ambulance medics who flew him to hospital by walking un-aided less than four months after suffering limb-threatening injuries.
Joe Addison was about to mount a 30ft ski jump when a loose wire caused the engine of his 250cc machine to cut out.
The 32-year-old was forced to bale out and broke both his legs as he crashed to the ground at the racetrack in Iden near Rye.
Land paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) were first on scene and called in the helicopter which arrived within just 10 minutes.
Dr Neal Durge and critical care paramedic Jez Loseby administered strong painkillers and sedated Joe at the track-side.
They also re-set his fractured right femur and broken left ankle before airlifting him to the major trauma centre at King’s College Hospital in London in just 15 minutes.
He spent three weeks at the specialist hospital before he was allowed back home in Sittingbourne and is still off work but expected to make a full recovery.
Earlier this month, he visited the helicopter base at Marden to thank the crew and present a cheque for £500 to the charity which relies almost entirely on donations.
He said: “It was brilliant to see the guys who helped me. They were amazing on the day, they really were. Hats off to them and I really cannot thank them enough.
“When I first saw them and stood up to shake their hands they were gobsmacked. They said they were expecting me to be in a wheelchair. They couldn’t believe I wasn’t even walking with crutches.”
Kent Air Ambulance’s doctor and paramedic can carry out advanced medical procedures at the scene of an accident or medical emergency, giving patients the best chance and quality of survival.
Dr Durge said: “It was good to see Joe because we rarely see the outcome of what we do. The last time we saw him he was clearly in a lot of pain.
“He was very grateful and even more so because the doctors at King’s told him our intervention had made a significant difference to his recovery which has been incredibly quick.”
Joe had finished an impressive fourth out of a field of about 40 riders in the first race and was lying second in his club championship at the time of his crash in August.
Despite missing the last three rounds, he still finished fourth in the championship and will be presented with his trophy at a ceremony in Camber Sands on December 3rd.
He added: “If the accident had been caused by rider error I may have considered quitting but because it was the bike I can’t just stop doing something I love.
“Everyone thinks I’m crazy after the injuries I’ve suffered but I can’t stop. Motocross is like a disease.”

Marshall Nightsky Ceilings are looking to donate a ceiling!
Marshall Nightsky ceilings work hard in creating ceilings all over the U.K
They worked with and designed for the likes of Nick Knowles from DIY SOS, Julia Kendal from 60 Minute Makeover, Kirton Healthcare to name just a few!
Their paint can be applied direct to any ceiling surface, looking invisible by day but by night 100% visability, its just like the roof has been removed. No electricity needed with a 20 year life span. The ceilings light up and twinkle for up to 6 hours every night.
They are looking to donate a ceiling for a good cause, this can be a bedroom or a hospital room so long as everyone benefits from this amazing ceiling.
They are looking for nominees or suggested reasons why you or your trust should receive such a gift. Nominations close on October 31st 2011 then they will select one winner to design and create for in time for Christmas.

Maybe
When I wander.......................................
don't tell me to come and sit down ;
wander with me,
it may be because I am hungry, thirsty, need the toilet,
or, maybe I just need to stretch my legs..........
When I call for my mother.........(even though I'm ninety!)
don't tell me she has died;
reassure me, cuddle me, ask me about her.
It may be that I am looking for the security that my mother
once gave.................
When I shout out.................
please don't ask me to be quiet......or walk by
I am trying to tell you something,
but have difficulty in telling you what
be patient…………Try to find out,
I may be in pain……….
When I become agitated or appear angry…………….
Please don’t reach for the drugs first,
I am trying to tell you something,
It may be too hot….. too bright……too noisy,
Or maybe it’s because I am missing my loved ones.
Try to find out……first……
When I don’t eat my dinner or drink my tea……
It may be because I’ve forgotten how to;
Show me the what to do….remind me,
It may be that I just need to hold my knife and fork
I may know what to do then………
When I push you away when you trying to help me……,
A wash, perhaps, or getting dressed.
Maybe it’s because I have forgotten what you have said;
Keep telling me what you are doing…….,
Over and over and over…………
Maybe others will think you’re the one that needs the help!
With all my thoughts and maybes,
Perhaps it will be you…..who reaches my thoughts……
Understands my fears and will make me feel safe…..
Maybe it will be you…..that I need to thank
If only I knew how……………..

Homerton Hospital:
“On Behalf of Homerton Hospital, I am writing to thank you for the kind donation of £471.25 from events and competitions run by you and subscribed to by our staff. We are extremely grateful for this money which will certainly be put to very good use in improving facilities for patients. Fundraising projects for 2011 include an oscillator fan for the special care baby unit and new improved facilities for our sexual health patients. Many Thanks again for your support to our hospital” – Tonya Chalker, Fundraiser, Project Manager, Press and Comms.
Pennine Acute Hospitals:
“Thank you so much for your recent donation in the sum of £1179.95. This donation has been paid into the general endowment fund of the charity, an account that can be accessed by smaller wards and departments within the trust who do not necessarily attract their own charitable donations. I do hope that the event held in October will be successful and should you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.”- Jan Bolton, Charitable Fundraising Manager.

Celebrate Carers week 14th June to 20th June...
To celebrate carers week, we would like YourChoice readers to grab a copy of ‘Caitlin’s Wish’, a book written by Victoria Taylor for her daughter Adele-Caitlin who was only 2 yrs old when her Dad was diagnosed with a rare brain condition called IH. Initially Adele-Caitlin coped well because she knew no different. However, when she started school, she realised that her life was different. Victoria wrote this book to help Adele-Caitlin see life from a different perspective. After reading the book, she learned to look for the things that her Dad could do, rather than dwell on what he couldn’t do anymore. By focusing on the positive elements in her life, it made it easier to cope with the negative. ’Caitlin’s Wish’ has been published in the hope that it might help others. 25% of the royalties from every book sold will be going to Crossroads Care and the IH research Foundation.
